Dr. Eugene M. DeLoatch is Dean and Full Professor of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Prior to beginning his service at Morgan in 1984, Dr. DeLoatch completed twenty-four years of affiliation with Howard University in Washington, D.C. His last assignment there was Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering for a period of nine years. The holder of B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, he also holds a M.S.E.E. and an earned doctorate in Bioengineering. In recognition toward of many years of service to engineering education, Dr. DeLoatch was awarded Honorary Doctorates by Lafayette College (PA) in 1988 and by Binghamton University (NY) in 2004. Dean DeLoatch is a Past President of the American Society of Engineering Education, having served that 12,000-member organization as its President during the 2002-2003 activity year. At the time of his election to the Presidency of ASEE, Dr. DeLoatch became the first African American to hold that position in its 109-year history. Among his additional activities he is a (Governor appointed) member and Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Technology and Economic Development Corporation of Maryland; a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Engineering Education; Chairman of the Council of Dean’s of Engineering of the Historically Black College and Universities; and Co-Founder of the Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Program. Dr. DeLoatch served as a member of several study committees and boards of the NAE, NSF, NASA, and DOE. He has been a member of the Technical Advisory Board for the Whirlpool Corporation and the Scientific Review Board of the Lister Hill National Center at the National Library of Medicine. His research and development activities have been funded by a variety of agencies and companies including NSF, NASA, DOE, DoD (PET I & II), Army Corps of Engineers, ONR, Rockwell, Hughes, Lockheed Martin, NCI/NIH, etc. At present, Dr. DeLoatch is serving as the Principal Investigator of the Knowledge Integration Management Center of Excellence funded by the Army Research Laboratory. The goal of the Center is to investigate and pilot technologies and approaches that could have major impact on the way the Future Force performs at present and outward to the year 2015. Dean DeLoatch has spent many years as an educator and researcher and remains committed to promoting engineering to young people with particular emphasis on individuals from groups that are underrepresented in the profession. |
