The success and safety of a flight operation is often hindered by the problem of low visibility. Low Visibility is often caused by external factors such as the time of day, as well as inclement weather conditions. One of the goals of NASA’s Integrated Intelligent Flight Deck (IIFD) is to solve this problem by introducing computer generated 3-dimensional imagery to the cockpit.

In an effort to help improve the accuracy of terrain rendering for NASA’s Integrated Intelligent Flight Deck (IIFD), technologies, Morgan State University is exploring the use of open source libraries to render terrain that adhere to the strict specifications of the RTCA SC-193 requirements.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), runway incursion incidents and near accidents on airport runways, taxiways and ramps are on the rise. In the past five years there has been a 60 percent increase in runway incursions. In 1999, 320 incidents were reported.

During the 2004 -2005 Academic school year CIBAC funded activities for outreach to K-12 as well as university students in the Aeronautics Education Laboratory. The program focused on students from the Baltimore Public School system as well as involving several university students.
