MSU Campus - One academic program cannot meet all the needs of all students. Lecture and laboratory courses go a long way, but do not include all the developmental experiences needed by our engineering students. Therefore, the MSU School of Engineering offers additional learning experiences to meet the varied needs of its diverse student population. Among the programs offered at the MSU School of Engineering are: The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP), Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), Knowledge Integration Management Center of Excellence (KIMCOE), and the Chesapeake Information Based Aeronautics Consortium (CIBAC).
LSAMP is funded by the National Science Foundation. The program is designed to provide underrepresented minority students research experience by allowing them to work under the supervision of a faculty member or professional scientist/mentor at an industrial, governmental, or university laboratory.
HBCU-UP focuses on retention and, therefore, significantly increases the number of minorities who successfully complete baccalaureate degrees in four years and enter and complete doctoral degree programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
KIMCOE's Summer Research Institute is an Army Research Laboratory funded program that organizes and funds a community of faculty researchers and offers students the opportunity to conduct research and develop scholarly articles. Through KIMCOE's Summer Institute, students conducted research on topics assigned by faculty advisors who provided them with guidance, helped them develop strong research skills, and challenged them to think critically about the research task and the problem it addressed. During the eight week program, students conducted library and internet literature searches, engaged in experimentation, collected, documented, and analyzed data, prepared technical presentations, and engaged in discussions on a wide variety of timely topics related to engineering and its applications.
The CIBAC Summer Research Institute is a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded investigative program focused on aircraft safety and security research. NASA Langley’s Aeronautics Research arm provides program advisement and management for the studies conducted. Students were placed in a highly independent learning environment allowing them to develop the critical skills necessary to create products in this new global information based economy. During the eight-week summer program, students participated in aviation and aerospace research leading to safer flying for general aviation aircraft.
Through an array of educational programs, like LSAMP, HBCU-UP, KIMCOE, and CIBAC, Morgan State University has shown a willingness to provide educational programs so students can more effectively achieve their academic goals. MSU, like many of today's public and private universities, has broadened its scope of educational programs in order to attract and serve an increasingly diverse student population.
