Title: Synthetic Vision Systems

Abstract--- The focus of NASA’s Aviation Safety Program is to decrease the number of fatal accidents caused by low visibility conditions, as well as to give the benefits of clear day flight operations regardless of the actual outside conditions. Synthetic Vision Systems are necessary to improve situational awareness among pilots.  An increase in situational awareness is accomplished by providing a perspective synthetic view of the outside world.  This is implemented through the use of an on-board database driven by precise aircraft positioning information and terrain models.  The need for enhancements in terrain engines has become necessary in the development of Synthetic Vision Systems. These enhancements should address high resolution, portability, and high-speed rendering capabilities.  This project involves comparing various terrain engines written in both C++ and Java.
