IEGR 309: Materials Engineering - Spring 2001

Week 13 Links

What to write about? That was the question that plagued me for about two hours while I decided on what to focus for this week's links. In the tradition of the My Links page, I wanted something that was relevant to the topics that my class focused on this semester. I know, you all want to know what I eventually came up with. Well, over the last four weeks of class, we have been reading chapters in the manufacturing book. The last chapter that we read was on ceramics. This week's links will not be focusing on ceramics- that was actually last week's links. No, this week I will focus on casting and the moulds and equipment used in the process.

The World of Die-Cast:
Die casting is one of the more important aspects of the casting systems that are used today. This site gives a fairly detailed overview of the entire die casting system, from material and equipment used to an example of the products made.

The Full Monty:
This site has a full range of casting processes and the types of materials that are best produced by a particular system. It also gives valuable information on the design portion of materials, the design portiojn that deals with the making of the casting shell. In all, this site is very informative about the casting process.

Technical Casting:
There is no such thing as technical casting but this site really goes into detail about the technical and scientific aspects of the casting process. The makers of the site were focused on the scientific making of the casting for a car engine. This aspect of the casting is good for an engineering perspective and this is why it was included in the sites for the week 13 links.

Missing Sponge?:
I am not sure what is lost foam exactly. But this site goes into detail about this casting technique. In fact this was the main focus of thuis website and is quite intersting.

Casting Made Easy:
This website gives almost a guided tour of the method of producing a casted product. The site goes from the creation of the wax filling right to the making of the final proct and the comparison to the initial filling. it also gives a lovely definiton for Investment Casting and getting the best out of this method of producing units.
