The National Transportation Center is funded through a grant by the USDOT Research and Special Programs Administration. Eligible to receive up to $1 million annually in grant funds, the Center must generate an equal match through state, local and private funds.

The State of Maryland continues to provide unrestricted funding that matches a large portion of the federal funds awarded each year to the NTC. The state appropriation not only provides additional resources for all of NTC's programs, but also allows greater flexibility in investing funds in research, education and outreach activities for which matching funds are not easily found. In addition, the NTC established matching research partnerships with the Maryland Department of Transportation, Maryland Mass Transit Administration, State Highway Administration, and Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

Additional support comes from the following agencies: State Highway Administration Office and Traffic Safety, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, State Highway Administration Motor Carrier Division, Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Port Administration, John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Maryland Aviation Administration, Public Service Commission and the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
