The National Center for Transportation Management, Research and Development, better known as the National Transportation Center (NTC), continues to undertake activities to optimize and improve transportation systems management and development. Our theme, "Transportation: A Key to Human and Economic Development", continues to emphasize the human impacts of and interactions with surface transportation systems, particularly the socio-economic, efficiency, technological and safety aspects. Complementing this theme is the goal of increasing the numbers of well-qualified minorities and women entering transportation careers.
Central to this emphasis are activities geared toward education,
research and technology transfer, which all add to the body of knowledge
regarding safe and efficient transportation. The NTC disseminates
this knowledge to the benefit of transportation suppliers, customers
and the public at large.
NTC is part of the USDOT University Transportation Centers
Program. The Center was established by Congress under the Intermodal
Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), re-authorized
in 1998 by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21)
and re-authorized again by the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient
Transportation Act, a Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LV) in 2005. The
NTC is located on the Morgan State University campus in Baltimore,
Maryland.
The mission of the National Transportation Center is to advance U.S.
technology and expertise in the many disciplines comprising transportation.
Promotion of transportation-related careers among students and providing
training and research opportunities for faculty and transportation
professionals, has allowed the NTC to move forward in its progress
over the years. An important element of the education and training
component of the National Transportation Center is broadening degree
programs in transportation to equip professionals with knowledge and
skills required to plan, develop and manage transportation systems.
A team-oriented environment facilitates the continued growth of
the NTC. Staff, faculty researchers, students and transportation
professionals continue to put forth their collective interests in
order to help the NTC succeed and make the transportation industry
more visible. The State of Maryland continues to provide funding
that matches a large portion of the federal funds
awarded each year to the Center. In addition, the NTC has established
research partnerships with the Maryland Department of Transportation,
Maryland Transit Administration, State Highway Administration and
the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
In 1999, the NTC founded a much-needed resource of information
and additional support, the NTC
Advisory Committee. The committee serves as advisors to NTC
and the university. The committee is made up of individuals who
are truly distinguished and widely respected in transportation circles
around the region and nationwide.
