Our Purpose: Education The world continues to undergo changes. These changes are global, technological, legislative and societal, and they pose ever increasing challenges for SAME professionals. To meet these challenges requires our active and strong support for education of young people and the continuing education of practicing professionals. Clearly, the mandate of The Society Charter remains ever relevant as we approach the millennium. Accordingly, we commit ourselves, individually and collectively, to support initiatives that contribute to excellence in education in our communities and which provide our memebership with oppurtunities for continued intellectual and technical growth. SAME's Continuing Professional Development Program provides members with oppurtunities to advance professional skills. SAME uniquely brings together a diverse membership from the uniformed services, governmental agencies, and industry. This collective association of skills and experience provides unmatched oppurtunities to identify and solve technical problems, exchange research, resolve regulatory and business process issues, improve emergency response capabilities, and open doors to exchanges among the public and private sectors. Moreover, SAME mentoring programs uniquely offer oppurtunities to assist members in the enhancement of their leadership, managerial, and technical abilites. Our Continuing Professional Development Program conforms to the standards set by professional engineering institutions and state boards of registration. The "Model Rules and Regulations for Regulation Boards," produced by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), form the basis of The Society program. These Model Rules provide guidance on the requirements for state professional registration including Continuing Professional Competency (CPC). Today, many states require CPC as a condition of license renewal-not only in engineering, but other professions as well-and many more states are expected to impose these requirements. The basic unit of measure for meeting CPC requirements is the Professional Development Hour (PDH). Defined by NCESS as one full hour of professionally relevant instruction or presentation, most participating states require 15 PDH credits annually for renewal of a professional license. Society members who participate in conferences, technical seminars and tours, and who publish articles in The Military Engineer may earn these credits. This benefit of membership reflects The Society's response to changing professional standards and the imperative of continuing professional development. |
