Department Overview
The Department of Civil Engineering provides an undergraduate program of study in the planning, design, and management of civil infrastructure and service systems. Each student receives a broad, professional education in all fundamental areas of civil engineering, however, specialty areas of study offered include environmental and water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering , and transportation engineering. The specific aims of the Department's undergraduate program are to: (1) sponsor courses which provide the broad educational background required of all engineers; (2) develop in students an appreciation for and understanding of the materials and human resources utilized in designing and constructing civil engineering- related systems that shelter people and equipment, transport people and goods, supply water and dispose of waste, and deliver energy; (3) produce graduates who think logically and perform in an orderly manner when solving engineering problems; and (4) produce graduates who can communicate and demonstrate confidence in their work. The MSU civil engineering graduate is particularly well-versed in the use of computers to solve both simple and complex engineering problems. Particular emphasis is placed on preparing a graduate who is versatile and who can work as a member of a team under demanding conditions.
