Master of Science in Transportation Curriculum

Course Catalog

TRSP.506 Urban Public Transportation Systems- 3 Credit Hours. The basic aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the major problems and issues in the planning and management of public transportation systems. The role of the various types of public transportation systems including buses, rapid transit systems, and other new models will be examined.

TRSP.507 Physical Distribution I- 3 Credit Hours.
This course focuses on management of the distribution of goods and freight within and between urban areas. The course covers management of raw materials and finished products transported from sources to marketplace.

TRSP.508 Physical Distribution II- 3 Credit Hours.
This course focuses on the strategy, tactical, and contingency planning in the physical distribution of goods and service. Such planning deals with the trends facing firms and the strategies, options, and tactics available through physical distribution. Prerequisite: TRSP.507

TRSP.509 Transportation in Developing Countries- 3 Credit Hours. This course provides an opportunity for indepth examination of transportation issues as they relate to developing countries. The course deals with problems, issues, policies, and solutions of transportation systems and the development process.

TRSP.510 Management of Transportation Systems- 3 Credit Hours. This course is designed to familiarize the student with some of the basic tools and skills required for mid-level and senior managers in transportation. It will focus on managerial issues and problems including economic, marketing, operational,financial,technological labor related,political and institutional concerns.

TRSP.511 Labor Relations in Transportation- 3 Credit Hours. This course will examine the relationship between the transportation and its organized or union employees. Special attention will be given to labor-management cooperation to enhance employee productivity and at the same time meet employee needs of increased wages, better working conditions, etc. The major problems and issues in collective bargaining and negotiation will also be examined.

TRSP.512 Special Problems in Transportation-3 Credit Hours.This course provides the opportunity for students to examine special topics of inters in transportation. They may include; Air & Water Ports Management Transportation, Geographic Information Systems, Transportation Safety, Transportation & Environmental Issues, Transportation Policy, Transportation & Energy Conservation, Transportation & Spatial Interation, and other emerging transportation issues.

TRSP.513 Transportation Internship- 3 Credit Hours.
This course provides pratical experience in the field of transportation and an opportunity to apply research and management tools to real world situations by placement with a transportation agency or organization.

TRSP.514 Advanced Transportation Intership- 3 Credit Hours. This course provides practical expireince in the field of transportation and opportunity to apply transportation research and managment tools to real-world situation.It is designed for students selected for the MSU-MDOT internship program or other similar internship and co-op programs.

TRSP.516 Microcomputer Application in Transportation- 3 Credit Hours. This course is designed to provide an introduction of microcomputer applications appropriate for solving problems in transportation planning and management.

TRSP.517 Intelligent Transportation -3Credit Hours.
This introductory course examines the cross-cutting issues in intelligent transportation system (ITS) deployment in the United States. Discussions will include the overview of ITS evolutional process, the original six program catagory areas, the new seven services, and intelligent transportation infrastructure and system architecture.

TRSP.518 Advanced Urban Transportation Planning- 3 Credit Hours. This cource discusses the traditoinal four -step planning process and the respective mathematical models and algorithms. Hands-on experience with state -of-the-art travel demand simulation, noise, and air quality analysis software will be emphasised. Students will be given a case problem and are expected to follow MPO accepted procedures to document and present their proposed transportation plan.

TRSP.520 Transportation System Evaluation -3 Credit Hours. The course focuses on analytical methods commnly used in transportation planning. Discussions include transit, highway, and intersection capacity analysis, pavenent performance evaluation, traffic accident analysis, benefit-cost analysis, and environmental impact assesment process. Hands-on experience with planning module of the 1990 Highway Capacity Software is emphasised. Prerequisite:TRSP 516 and 503, or permission of the instrucror.

TRSP.788 and 799 Supervised Research-3 Credit Hours(each). This course is designed to anable the student to participate in meaningful and rigrous research in transportation. Under the supervission and direction of a faculty members, the student will conduct research in an area of interest. This provides an opportunity to apply research methods to analyse specific transportatino problems.

TRSP.797 Thesis Guidance
Thesis guidance provides students who have not completed their thesis in the assigned semester, a mechanism for continuing their work under faculty supervission.

TRSP.799 Thesis Seminar in Transportation -3 Credit Hours. This course is for students conducting reaerch and writting a thesis under faculty supervission.
